Melbourne City Synagogue

Melbourne City Synagogue

Welcome to the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation - the Jewish Heart of the City.

Known as the City of Melbourne Synagogue, it is the only Shule in the inner city area, within walking distance from the City's hotels and hospitals and serves as the City's Jewish Centre.

Whether you are a local or a tourist, you will find the Synagogue Centre a warm inviting place to spend some time. We are here to help you with your Jewish and religious needs and look forward to personally welcoming you to the Synagogue.

The City of Melbourne Synagogue is open every Sabbath and high holiday. Please refer to our calendar for a comprehensive listing of dates and times.

During the week, the secretary is in attendance in the Synagogue office every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10am to 2pm. Please note that these times do not apply to Public Holidays or Jewish Holidays.

East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation

In 1857, the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation was established after separating from the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation. A grant of land was obtained at the top of the city on the corner of Little Lonsdale St and Stephen St (now known as Exhibition St).
