As you sit in Arts Centre Melbourne's heritage Ian Potter State Theatre to enjoy an opera, ballet or musical, tilt your head back a little to take in the amazing ceiling and its 75,000 tiny brass spheres. As part of Reimagining Arts Centre Melbourne, the Ian Potter State Theatre is revitalised for the future, with new accessible seating in the Stalls, upgraded seats and climate control, enhanced acoustics, and state-of-the-art theatre technology to support generations of performances to come. As the house lights dim, prepare to experience the highest standards of theatre and live performance. A new State theatre New Name: Ian Potter State Theatre As part of Reimagining Arts Centre Melbourne, the State Theatre closed for refurbishment in March 2024 and reopened in October 2026 with a new name: Ian Potter State Theatre. A Refurbished Theatre The 2,000-seat State theatre was designed by Australian actor and designer John Truscott, opened in 1984; has now been re-reimagined. The largest stage in the southern hemisphere. Disability access: excellent seats across all three levels can be easily reached by wheelchair, and accessible seating, supported by two lifts. Two new aisles in the stalls now meet a central walkway. Air conditioning from below, carpets replaced with blackbutt timber, improved sound quality, lighting system, two new rows in the balcony, and gold leafing on the ceilings. Melbourne has its theatrical crown jewel back, shinier than ever and ready for play.
