3pm Sunday August 27

Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Philipp Telemann

Melbourne Book Online

The Melbourne Musicians directed by Frank U. Pam with Anne Harvey-Nagl violin, Anne Gilby oboe and Sarah Lobegeiger de Rodriguez soprano, present the first of two programs commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the death of the great German baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767).

Telemann: Violin Concertos in A minor and G major; Oboe Concerto in F minor; Oboe & Violin Concerto in C minor; Ascension Cantata "Gott will Mensch und sterblich werden".

Handel: Arias from Julius Caesar, Rodelinda and Joshua.

In his lifetime Telemann was more famous and more widely admired than his friends Bach and Handel. After a period in the 19th century when his work was considered too facile it has been re-evaluated and his endless inventiveness has been recognised. He is regarded as an important forerunner of the Classical style.

Anne Harvey-Nagl is Concertmaster of the Vienna Volksoper, the Vienna Opera Ball Orchestra and Ensemble Kontrapunkte. She performs regularly as soloist with the Vienna Mozart Orchestra and is a member of the Koehne Quartet.

Anne Gilby has been Principal Oboe with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and all six Symphony Australia orchestras. She was Head of Woodwind at the VCA.
Sarah Lobegeiger de Rodriguez has sung several operatic roles in Bulgaria and appeared as soloist in numerous concerts and festivals, including with the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra.
