Warburton Bike Park builds its mountain bike network

Warburton Bike Park is taking shape as one of Victoria's major mountain biking destinations, combining purpose-built trails, substantial vertical descents and an official shuttle service around 70km east of Melbourne.

More than 80km of trails are now open across the network, with routes designed for different skill levels and riding styles. The longer-term project envisages up to 160km of trails, while the fully funded 125km Southern Network is expected to be completed in 2027.

The project has developed in stages. Construction began in 2024 and the first 30km opened to riders in July 2025. A major expansion followed in April 2026, accompanied by the introduction of shuttle services and new terrain around Mt Tugwell.

Trails have been designed by Australian trail-building company World Trail. The network includes easy, intermediate and advanced riding, although the park advises that its trails are graded to international standards and green trails may be more challenging than riders have encountered at some other networks.

Shuttles and facilities

The official park shuttle carries riders to the summit of Mt Tugwell, the highest point in the network, allowing access to the upper gravity trails without the corresponding climb. Pick-up points operate from Wesburn Park and Warburton, and advance shuttle bookings are recommended because services can sell out.

Wesburn Park is the main trailhead, with free parking, a pump track, toilets, showers, bike wash and tool stations. Riders can also use route guides and the park map to plan anything from easier loops to longer rides incorporating climbs and technical descents.

The trails themselves are reserved for mountain biking rather than walking, horse riding or motorcycling. Riders are encouraged to inspect unfamiliar trails and features before attempting them at speed.

Warburton Bike Park is open during daylight hours throughout the year, subject to conditions. The entire park closes on Total Fire Ban days, while severe weather, high winds, maintenance and safety issues can result in individual trail closures.

The development is managed and maintained by Yarra Ranges Council. One year after the first trails opened, the park reported more than 1,000 riders visiting each week, providing an indication of the demand generated during its initial stages.

As the network continues to expand, riders should check current trail conditions and closures before travelling, particularly while construction and maintenance work continue across the broader project.
