Melbourne occupies a different position on the championship calendar in 2027. Rather than opening the Formula 1 season, Australia will stage round three of a 24-race championship, following the Bahrain Grand Prix from 12–14 March and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix from 19–21 March. Japan follows Melbourne one week later at Suzuka.

The change marks another evolution in the Australian Grand Prix’s place on the international calendar. Melbourne became Formula 1’s Australian home in 1996 and traditionally occupied the opening position for much of its history at Albert Park. Melbourne to host its first Formula 1 Sprint

The major change for 2027 is the introduction of the Formula 1 Sprint format at Albert Park for the first time.

Australia is one of 10 Sprint events on the 2027 calendar, alongside Bahrain, Japan, Canada, Monaco, Great Britain, Italy, São Paulo, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The expanded Sprint program means the Melbourne weekend will carry additional competitive Formula 1 action before Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix.

It will give the 2027 event a substantially different structure from a conventional Grand Prix weekend, while also placing championship points on offer before the main race.

Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit

The modern Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit measures 5.278 kilometres and the Australian Grand Prix is contested over 58 laps, covering a race distance of 306.124 kilometres. Charles Leclerc holds the current race lap record of 1 minute 19.813 seconds, set in 2024.

Albert Park underwent significant changes ahead of Formula 1’s return in 2022, including resurfacing and alterations intended to produce a faster circuit and create more opportunities for racing.

Tickets for the 2027 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix go on sale starting October 1, 2026, with the general public onsale opening on Tuesday, 6 October 2026.

A range of ticket categories is being prepared for the 2027 Australian Grand Prix, spanning general admission-style Park Pass access, grandstand seating and premium hospitality.

Park Passes provide access to trackside viewing areas around Albert Park as well as the event’s fan areas and entertainment program. The official Australian Grand Prix website currently lists a four-day adult Park Pass covering Thursday to Sunday at $385, with individual day options also offered. Ticket availability and pricing can change as the event approaches.

Premium packages include facilities overlooking different sections of the circuit. Race Cube is positioned on the infield at Turn 11, while Pit Entry overlooks the approach to pit lane and The Laneway provides main-straight viewing with hospitality included.

Official Australian Grand Prix travel packages, combining event tickets with Melbourne accommodation and other race-weekend inclusions, are scheduled to go on sale from 6 October 2026.
