Lose the pandemic blues in new restaurant precinct

ONE of the city's most anticipated new dining precincts has opened its doors.

The landmark $800 million 80 Collins development includes 40 storeys of office space and a 255-room boutique Next Hotel, along with high-end retail and hospitality spaces scattered throughout a network of laneways that snake through a city block that runs from the corner of Collins and Exhibition streets.

On Thursday night, Nick & Nora's officially welcomed its first drinkers. The newest venue from the Speakeasy Group, which also includes CBD bars Eau De Vie, Boilermaker House and Viking themed restaurant Mjølner, offers champagne, cognac, cocktails, caviar and artisanal cheese served in glamorous art deco-inspired surrounds.

Co-owner Greg Sanderson said while he never imagined opening a venue during a pandemic, it was good to open the doors to customers.

"It feels good to turn the lights down, have the music playing and start serving drinks," he said. "Hopefully we can offer a level of escapism , you can leave Melbourne 2020 behind and enter a different art deco world."

Offering build-your-own salads and smoothies, Bowls Baby opens on Friday and is joined by cafes People's Coffee, Maverick and Upstate Coffee.

These venues will be joined by some of this year's biggest restaurant openings that include Society Restaurant from Chris Lucas (Chin Chin, Kong, Baby, Kisume) and Martin Benn and Vicki Wild (from Sydney's acclaimed Sepia restaurant ), and Farmer's Daughters, an eatery that celebrates the produce of Gippsland from chef Alejandro Saravia (Pastuso), which is scheduled to open in October.

Charlie Carrington's Colours Bowls, Christy Tania's Glace dessert restaurant and Handpicked Wines' urban cellar door round out hospitality offerings.

The flagship store for Danish design company Georg Jensen has opened, along with jeweller Sener Besim and footwear brand FEIT.
