The Ada Tree, located in the Yarra State Forest in the Yarra Valley is considered to be one of Victoria's largest living trees.
The Ada Tree is a mountain ash tree estimated to be over 300 years old and at 75 metres towers over the surrounding rainforest in the headwaters of the Little Ada River.
Ada Tree is one of the oldest surviving trees in Victoria, surviving over 300 years of fire and storms, and almost a century of logging in the surrounding forest.
It is now protected as part of the Ada Tall Trees Reserve.
The Ada Tree is believed to be named after Ada Mortimore (nee Hansen), a local resident who knew the surveyor.
Ada Tree Rainforest Walk
Ada Tree Walk is a 2.7 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Ada, Victoria, Australia that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels.
The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, running, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
From the picnic area follow Island Creek to the Ada Tree, and return along the same route.

Distance: 3.2km return
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Grade: Level 2 - No experience required. The track is hardened gravel or compacted surface and may have a gentle hill section or sections and some steps.
Start and finish: Ada Tree picnic area on Ada River Road.

Download MapThe Walk into History
The Walk into History is a 2 day walk through the Yarra State forest between Warburton and Powelltown. The walking track follows the historic tramways and visits several old timber mills providing the walleer with an insight into some of the infrastructure used to process and remove timber from the forest in the early 1900s.
Walking Tracks
The Ada Tree can be reached from the Ada Tree car park via the walking track that meanders through the Island Creek rainforest. The walle is an easy 3.2km, 1.5 hour walk return trip from the car park and picnic area to the Ada Tree and back again, via the same walking track.
Previously the walking track from the Ada Tree back to the car park followed an old timber harvesting road. This road is once again being used by timber trucks as part of nearby harvesting operations. Due to the narrow nature of this road it should not be used by walkers.
The Ada Tree is now an alternative start and finish point on the Walk into History. Similarly the Ada Tree can now be accessed on a dedicated walking track branch along with the Federal Mill if walkers intend to experience the entire Walk into History.
Location and Access
The Ada Tree is located about 100km east of Melbourne and is accessible on well formed gravel roads from Warburton, Powelltown or Noojee.
From Warburton follow Warburton-Woods Point Road, Brahams Road, Big Creek Road to the east and Ada River Road. From Powelltown - Noojee Road either take Big Creek Road (east of Powelltown) or New Turkey Road (west of Noojee) to access the Ada Tree car park on Ada River Road.
These roads are suitable for vehicles for most of the year, but care should be taken after rain or snow.
Attractions
A sheltered picnic table and toilet facilities are provided in a forest setting at the Ada Tree picnic area, which is located at the start of the walle.
Looking After The Area
- Vehicles, bikes and.horses are not permitted on the Ada Tree or Walk Into History walking tracks
- The dry nature of the forest means that the area is ve1y fire prone and great care needs to be taken by visitors
- Light fires in accordance with Fire Regulations; in a 30cm deep trench, less than lm in diameter, at least 3m from vegetation and not on Total Fire Ban days.
- No rubbish disposal is provided; so please take your rubbish with you.
- All native plants and animals are protected
- Vehicles and trail bikes must not be driven off roads or tracks and must be registered and roadworthy.
-Avoid polluting streams with refuse, detergent and human wastes.
- Dogs are allowed in State forest but must be kept under control at all times, especially in camping and picnic areas or near other visitors.
