Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum

Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum

The Alexandra Timber Tramway and Museum..... is a tourist railway and museum situated in north-central Victoria.

There you can see a recreation of the bush sawmill and tramway era of the Rubicon Forest from 1900 to 1950.

We have also rescued and preserved a wide range of industrial locomotives, rolling stock and machinery.

The Alexandra Timber Tramway is totally run by volunteers and has been around since the early 1970's. First incorporated as a not-for-profit association in 1985, we are now one of seventeen Tourist Railway groups in Victoria accredited through Transport Safety Victoria. That was a difficult step to achieve and we continue to work hard to maintain that high level.

Our museum now features a vast showcase of history exhibits, from both local, and the nearby timber logging industry in the Rubicon Forest. We also have one of the most extensive collections of industrial rolling stock in Australia. Additional facilities include toilet and picnic facilities.

There is much to see at the Alexandra Timber Tramway for both railway enthusiasts and history buffs. Our aim is to provide visitors with an experience that is a fun day out for themselves and their children. Whether you are riding our trains or having a wandLog On Bogieer through our many display rooms and outdoor exhibits, our number one goal is safety.

How to get there ..

Alexandra is situated 135 kilometres north-east of Melbourne via either the Maroondah or Melba Highways.

(Melways ref 610 T8).

The Timber Tramway is in Station Street, the last street on the eastern side of the town. Access from the main street is via either Bon or Vickery Streets. The site is also accessible from Downey Street just past the Mobil service station.

The car park is on the northern side of the site.
