Amphlett Lane

Amphlett Lane

Much has been written about a lane for Chrissy, maybe too much about the fight and the fighters and not enough about Chrissy and Melbourne.

Why a tribute to Chrissy Amphlett in Melbourne?

Chrissy was from Geelong and spent time in Sydney and lived in many cities. She was baptised and had her wake at the Collins Street Baptist Church. She loved the Melbourne theatre district. She played Judy Garland in The Boy From Oz at Princess Theatre and the Divinyls had played the Palace back when it was the Metro.

Chrissy Amphlett career was launched in Melbourne. In 1975 she lived in Prahran's Greville Street and it was at the Station Hotel that she first saw AC/DC, inspiring her own school uniform look. She got a job at The House of Merivale and Dr John and played porn queen Linda Lips in the musical Let My People Come at Total Theatre on Russell Street.

In between clubbing, she counted the Waiters Club on Meyer Place as a decent place to refresh. She and the Divinyls played in that most Melbourne of films, Monkey Grip.

Fight

The push for Amphlett Lane began last year with a petition that garnered the signatures of over 7,000 people, who agreed that it would be a fitting tribute for the legendary rocker. It also had the support of Amphlett's husband and Divinyls drummer Charley Drayton.

The initial plan was for the street to be called Chrissy Amphlett Lane, but this was rejected by the Registrar of Geographic Names because it went against official state guidelines.

Amplett joins rockers AC/DC who also have a Melbourne CBD lane named after them, as well as Crowded House drummer Paul Hester, who was honoured with the naming of the Paul Hester Walk along the Elwood Canal.

Lane Approved

Melbourne City Council this week officially gave their unanimous approval for the naming of a Melbourne lane in honour of the late Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett.

The soon-to-become Amphlett Lane, which currently sports the uninspiring name of CL1639, sits off Little Bourke St, near Spring St, close to the recently closed Palace Theatre where the Divinyls often played.

Venues are torn down. Cassettes break, posters fade, T-shirts fall apart. Chrissy's lane is a way of preserving our memories.

We don't have an issue with a lane for Chrissy, but if it were for a love of Melbourne there are millions of Melburnian's who lived (and loved) their entire lives in the grand old lady.

Amphlett Lane off Little Bourke Street between Spring and Exhibition streets was officially launched on Wednesday 18th February 2015
