After a year-long hiatus the Arts Project gallery is reopening its doors - in a new location.
The APA gallery is moving from its Northcote building which continues as a studio to a contemporary art space within Collingwood Yards.
Supporting artists with intellectual disabilities through our studio and gallery promoting their work and advocating for their inclusion in contemporary art practice.
Arts Project is a not-for-profit organisation and rely on government funds personal and philanthropic donations and commissions from artwork sales to continue our work.
Arts Project Australia offers ongoing studio-based sessions staffed by practising artists who provide support and assistance to the artists. It also runs an ongoing exhibitions and leasing program through which their work is promoted locally nationally and internationally across a wide variety of exhibiting contexts including public institutions and commercial galleries.
The ground floor gallery stages a full annual program of diverse exhibitions featuring work by artists from the studio as well as from the broader arts community. Visitors are most welcome to come and view the works on display.
Arts Project Australia's objectives
:: Provide the means for people with an intellectual disability to participate fully in the visual arts;
:: Promote the work of people with an intellectual disability within the broad spectrum of contemporary art practice;
:: Facilitate participation by people with an intellectual disability in mainstream programs courses and to encourage meaningful artistic exchange between disabled and non-disabled artists;
:: Broaden understanding and awareness of art by people with intellectual disabilities among artists and the general public;
:: Advocate art as both a vocational and a recreational pursuit;
:: Support and provide high quality community-based education and training in the visual arts.
In addition to the above the studio workshop program specifically aims to provide educational experiences which; Encourage personal development particularly of self-confidence and self-esteem which enhance the ability to function in other aspects of life.
