Asylum Seeker Resource Centre |
The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre is Australia's leading asylum seeker organisation. We are a multi-award winning, independent and non-federal government funded human rights organisation. We work at the coalface assisting some of the most disadvantaged people in our community.
We work directly with asylum seekers, both living in our community and detention, to provide direct aid and support as they seek refugee status in Australia.
About Us
We offer 30 holistic programs that protect asylum seekers from persecution and destitution, supports well-being and dignity, and empowers people to advance their own future.
Independent of Federal Government funding, the ASRC is the largest provider of aid, legal and health services to people seeking asylum in Australia. We are upheld by more than 1200 volunteers and 60 staff in assisting around 2,000 people each year.
Our vision is for all people seeking asylum have their human rights upheld and receive the support and opportunities they need to live independently. In order to achieve this, our mission is to:
Protect asylum seekers from persecution and destitution
Support well-being and dignity
Empower people and enable self-determination
From little things, big things grow
The ASRC began as a TAFE project in 2001, when Kon, then a teacher, discovered that asylum seekers were living in the community with virtually no basic support. This lead to the creation of a student-run and community funded Foodbank, which was launched from a tiny shop in Footscray with only a few boxes of food. That same year, the ASRC was established on June 8th, 2001.
As an independent, community-lead organisation, the ASRC is in a unique position to advocate for the human rights of people seeking asylum exempt from the pressures of Government or the private sector. For this reason, the ASRC has been able to take a leading position in the opposition of current asylum seeker policy, while offering alternatives to the asylum seeker issue.
