Backpackers Guide to Melbourne

Backpackers Guide to Melbourne

If you're backpacking round Australia, you're sure to land in Melbourne at some point.

The beautiful city is full of things to do and some even say it has the best shopping in the country.

Here's just a few of the places to stay, activities, restaurants and bars that should make it onto your must-do list in the wonderful city of Melbourne..

Things to do on a budget

Of course, no backpacking trip to Melbourne is complete without checking out Ramsay Street. The official Neighbours Tours are no longer but, thats not going to stop you is it?.. | How to get to Ramsay Street

The Philip Island Penguin Parade is free to watch and well worth your time. You'll see the Philip Island Fairy Penguins wobble and shuffle their way in single file back to their homes after a tough day foraging for food. Philip Island is just two hours drive from Melbourne and if you want to spend a few dollars for a premium view you can book a spot via the Melbourne Tour Co.

While in Melbourne do as Melburnians do and watch a game of Aussie Rules football. Whether you understand the game or not, the atmosphere is always electric - its the Geelong Cats that are at the top of the game and you can see them at the Marvel Stadium or the MCG.

Where to eat

As for cheap eats, check out the wealth of delicious pie shops in the city. They're a great choice if you're on the run. Try Dinkum Pies, Red Hill Bakery or Pie in the Sky for the official best pies in Melbourne.

Indulge in the incredible array of fruit and vegetable stands at the Queen Victoria Market. With all the fresh international produce here you'll definitely find something delicious to include in your picnic in the park - you can also get loads of free samples too, nom nom.

Where to drink

Just 20 minutes away from Melbourne is the suburb of St Kilda - this is where all the trendies hang out so you'll find the coolest in restaurants, bars and music venues. Check out The Vineyard - it's a cafe, live-music venue, restaurant and bar all rolled into one. The inside is stripped out like a cellar with rustic floorboards and dinner by candlelight.

If you like your nights out a bit crazier and eclectic get yourself to The Espy in the Esplanade Hotel. The iconic St Kilda pub plays hip hop, dance and metal and in the past has attracted some big names in the world of music.
