Carome Homestead consists of the remnants of one of Victoria's earliest flour mills, an 1860s bluestone farmhouse and associated farm buildings, as well as the former Wollert Methodist Church which was relocated to the site in 2022.

Working Heritage was appointed manager of the property in 2009, undertaking a broad range of conservation works on the dilapidated farmhouse which helped facilitate the site as a place of enjoyment for the whole community.

Today
Carome is now home to Two Beans and a Farm, a thriving cafe, and the Mernda Community Garden at Carome. Set in paddocks and perched on the Plenty River, the homestead provides open space and views that recall the area's rural past. Visit for a coffee in the historic bluestone homestead and views over the Plenty River. Carome is situated on the land of the Wurundjeri people.

Yesterday
The house and its setting are a connection to the earliest years of the colony of Victoria. A flour mill, powered by the flow of the Plenty River, was built on the site in the 1840s to feed the new town of Melbourne. The bluestone house was built in the 1860s when the area turned to mixed farming. Since then it's been a dairy farm and horse stud.

Working Heritage acquired Carome in 2009 when the house had been unoccupied for years, and was dilapidated. We repaired and adapted it to turn it into a place to be enjoyed by the community.

The future
Working Heritage is planning for the future of Carome. Now that the house has been revived, our attention is turning to the outbuildings, gardens and broader landscape.

In April 2017, the Carome Site Management Plan was launched to provide a road map for maximising the potential of site, particularly as a place of open space and connection to the area's rural past in one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state
