Coburg Lake Reserve |
A popular district level park offering a great variety of activities including picnicking, playgrounds, barbecue facilities, walking and bike paths and nature play all set in a beautiful heritage setting overlooking Coburg Lake.
At Coburg Lake Reserve there is Coburg Lake, playground, bbq facilities, walking and bike paths, weir, all opposite the old Pentridge Prison.
Several playgrounds include the cleverly decorated Outdoor Lounge and the Doug Hull Space Adventure playground. The main parking area for the Coburg Lake Reserve is located in Lake Grove and there are a small number of spaces just off Newlands Road.
Wildlife is a plenty off the shore of the lake and it's delightful to see the hoards of families with their bright, colourful blankets out picnicking on sunny weekends, kids squealing with a mix of joy and fear as they throw bread to the energetic and sometimes intimidating ducks and swans.
Prior to becoming a reserve, the site had its history as a bluestone quarry where Melbourne prisoners of the early 1900's were forced into hard labour, digging out the rocks. Many of those were used for the construction of Pentridge Prison. In the reserve, one wall of semi-quarried stone has been left exposed to demonstrates the park's former purpose.
