Colonel Tan's |
Colonel Tan's combines Thai and Asian cuisine in an American setting.
Located inside Revolver Upstairs multi-arts complex.
Created by Karen Batson, head chef of renowned inner city gastro-bars Cookie and The Toff In Town, the affordable menu combines traditional Thai cuisine with a cheeky American diner aesthetic. Classic dishes like Pad Thai with Tomato and Greens sit alongside a Tofu Whoppa with Satay Sauce, or a Thai take on Chicken Nuggets with Kaffir Lime and Cucumber Relish.
Then there's the Revolver Club Steak Sandwich and a Bangkok Bolognese, a variation on the classic Thai Drunken Noodles with fat stir-fried rice noodles and a spicy pork bolognaise.
The name is a tribute to Revolver co-owner and legendary Thai pop star Tan Punturaumporn. Years ago, Tan's kitchen staff took to calling him the Colonel when they started serving a Five Spice Chicken that brought to mind a certain chicken-loving colonel from America's deep south.
With fantastic menu illustrations from local graffiti artist Itch, Tan can now be seen not only as a southern colonel, but transformed into John Lennon, David Bowie, a skinny-jeaned Ramone and even an Amy Winehouse Tan. The new decor, appropriately enough, is all 70s oranges and browns, with a stylised Colonel Tan beaming down from the kitchen awning. To complete the diner experience, Burgers are served in stamped paper wrap and the Chicken Nuggets come in a classic wicker basket.
'It's tongue in cheek,' says chef Karen Batson. 'We wanted to reflect the Revolver club environment with something a little kitsch and playful. It's the American diner hits Bangkok.'
