Corkman Park |
Where The Corkman Irish Pub once stood, a new park is now open for the community to enjoy.
We've nicknamed it Corkman Park.
The Corkman Irish Pub was built in 1857 on the corner of Leicester St and Pelham St Carlton.
The park is open for the community to enjoy, until redevelopment occurs on the former Corkman Hotel site.
The block has been transformed into a new inner city green open space with grass and seating for people to exercise, relax and take their pets.
A STREET corner in Carlton where the Corkman Irish Pub once stood has been turned into a park under an agreement with the developers who illegally demolished it.
The spot was previously covered in tarps and construction wreckage after the historic venue was illegally taken down in October 2016 without planning permission.
A lengthy court battle followed before the developers were slapped with an enforcement order requiring them to build a park on the site until it was redeveloped.
The park has been finished and is open to the public.
"A new park on the corner of Leicester and Pelham Streets in Carlton is open for the community to enjoy, until redevelopment occurs on the former Corkman Hotel site," Lord Mayor Sally Capp said.
"It is pleasing to see the block transformed into a new inner city green open space with grass and seating for people to exercise, relax and take their pets."
It comes after the Andrews government introduced tough new laws to slap 10-year bans on developing sites where unlawful demolition work has been carried out so as to prevent the destruction of other heritage buildings in Victoria.
