Nov 2020 Update
ONE of Melbourne's oldest hotels will be converted into a primary school after the mystery buyer of the historic site was finally revealed.
The Dan O'Connell Hotel will become the Carlton campus of Fitzroy Community School, with students in prep to year 6 studying in rooms used as watering holes since 1884.
Principal Tim Berryman confirmed the purchase, until now secret, and said the pub on the corner of Canning and Princes streets would become the school's third campus.
"We'll probably call it the Canning Street campus of Fitzroy Community School but I think everyone will just call it 'The Dan' ,'' Mr Berryman said.
"I don't think you can walk away from that.''
The hotel closed in March when the first wave of the pandemic hit and sold in July for more than $2.5m.
"It was shrouded in secrecy, the whole thing, because it was an expression of interest,'' Mr Berryman said.
The Carlton campus adds to properties the school has in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, and Thornbury.
Mr Berryman said the school would retain the hotel's Gothic facade and a picture of "the Dan'' above the bar would remain in place when students filed in for classes.
"The building is exquisite and we are not going to touch the outside, you wouldn't be allowed to anyway,'' he said.
"But there is no desire to because it is such a fantasticlooking building. Who would want to change that building, because they don't build them like they used to.''
