Darebin Creek and Back | Bike Ride

Darebin Creek and Back | Bike Ride

I like this 19km ride because largely, its either downhill or on the flat using a cheat, which is a train ride from Merri Station up to Regent Station (which is all up hill) and then back down Tyler St to Darebin Creek.

The initial part of the ride going south follows Darebin Creek on its walking / bicycle track which is much improved from a few years ago. The section below Darebin Road is now complete and other than a very small corner just before Darebin Parklands is all on the path.

I retraced this ride on Sunday (21-11-2010) to see whether they had completed the Darebin Creek track through to the Yarra Trail via the new Darebin Bridge. In Darebin Parklands there is a split in the track (right goes along Yarana Road) or left which follows the creek down under the Hurstbridge railway line. Unfortunately the track stops just under Heidelberg Road which means 1. it does not go through to the Yarra Trail and 2. you have to turn around and climb that steep hill back to Darebin Parklands.

After climbing the hill, unlike the first route (map) I rode west along Parklands Avenue, Darling St, Duncan St down to Clarke St which is a quieter ride than along the railway line and less traffic.

I arrived at Merri Station to find the Epping Line was closed for trackworks and buses had replaced the trains. Fine if you're a passenger, but bad if you are a passenger with a bike meaning I had to ride home... uphills. I rode north much of the way alongside the Epping railway line and then started riding east past Murray Road, Preston. It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be, and felt quite a sense of achievement once I arrived home, just in time for a well deserved beer!
