Day Trip 1 - Melbourne East |
Walking day trip start at the corner of Victoria Parade / Street (N4) on the Carlton Gardens side (you'll work it out) and you have started the tour...
Look back at the very relaxing Carlton Gardens, home to the birth place of our nation, the ornate Royal Exhibition Buildings.
You are looking for a tram that will be coming from your right (with your back to the Carlton Gardens) and it will be a deep maroon colour. It will be an old tram, part of the (free) Melbourne City Circle trams, that circle this wonderful city. The tram will turn right into Spring Street and commence a running commentary that will point out some of the sights worth seeing.
Try and find a seat facing the front and of note...
On your right, the grand old theatre of Melbourne
On your left, Parliament House, home of the Victoria Government
On your left, Treasury Gardens, home to Cooks Cottage and the Fairy Tree
On your left, as the tram turns right into Flinders Street, pay attention and you will see the famous M.C.G, Melbourne Cricket Ground or the 'G' as the locals know it... home of Australian Rules Football and the 1956 Olympic Games.
On your left, across the rail yards is the Melbourne Tennis Centre and other sporting arena's and the new, Riverside Park (Birramung). Staying on your left, you will be coming up to building works of Federation Square. This is the corner of Flinders and Swanston and where you get off the tram... wasn't it a fun ride?
When you are safely on the footpath, looking away from the new square on each of the three other corners is a Melbourne icon. The beautiful St Paul's Church nestling quietly amoungst the hub of the city and buildings.
On the far corner is Young & Jackson's. Recently renovated and always a good place to stop and blow the froth off a couple on a Melbourne arvo scorcher, (drink 2 beers fairly quickly on a hot Melbourne afternoon) and home to the enigmic painting of Cloe!
On the corner that you should start walking to is Flinders Street Railway Station. Enjoy the grand architecture and it's entrance... a bevvy of clocks signallying the next departure time of trains. Watch the thousand ants come and go!
Time to turn left and head towards the Princess Bridge crossing the Yarra River. Somewhere in the distance, you should be able to see... Federation Arch (Plonk It on St Kilda Road) but worth a look. Gaze up at the Entertainment Centre spire (great at night) and to your right as you cross the bridge, Southgate Complex on Southbank, the home of Melbourne's renaissance!
To be continued...
