True Story: DVD 2017 AFL Grand Final - Richmond -v- Adelaide

This is a short story about how I came to buy a DVD of the 2017 Grand Final between Richmond and Adelaide.

Still reeling in excitement after the surprise win, I watched replay after replay of the recording on my Foxtel IQ of Channel 7's telecast. I found myself watching a quarter here and there whenever I wanted a pick-me-up, and each time it did exactly that.

Anyway, I digress. Every week I delete recordings or it will quickly fill up the disk space. It usually means deleting weekly shows like the news (Seven), Monday nights on the ABC (Australian Story, 4 Corners and Media Watch), Big Bang Theory on Tuesday and a few others.

Imagine my shock horror when I go to watch my umpteenth replay to see that the grand final recording is gone. I must have accidently deleted it but that did not help how I felt. I was gutted. Being a logical person I figured, I'll buy the official Grand Final DVD and watch that.

Story Begins

Here's where the story gets curiously interesting.

Stop #1: Richmond Football Club web site (Superstore): no DVD, in fact no DVD's fullstop. I know RFC sells DVDs in store (I have the Grand Final pack of 5) but none on the web site?

I eventually found a Books and DVD category but it was empty. A search for "DVD"in the Superstore: There are no products matching your criteria.

Stop #2: AFL web site: no DVD, no DVD section. Yes, I can buy tops, shorts, caps, guerseys, hoody's, medallians, posters, flags, mugs, steins, bracelets, clocks, wallet, onesy's, phone cover, beanie, football, watch, cushion but find a DVD category or search for DVD and zip, nothing.

Stop #3: Google: search for: dvd grand final afl 2017: as I write this (16 days later) search results clearly show the words Grand Final but back then results showed AFL - Premiers 2017 Richmond Tigers DVD which suggests its a coverage of the season not a grand final replay.

Stop #4: DVDLand appeared to be the only retailer with a DVD of the Grand Final although, the cover and spiel did not say it was a grand final replay. I figured if DVDLand has it, then so will JB HiFi, so I popped into JB HiFi and purchased AFL - Premiers 2017 Richmond Tigers DVD with a little sceptisim. It doesn't mention a grand final reply.

16 days later I returned to the AFL web site and finally found it after scrolling through 3 pages of merchandise.

When is a DVD Cover of the Grand Final not the grand final?

Here is the official Richmond Tigers 2017 Premiers BluRay DVD sold at DVDLand.

Nowhere does it say "Grand Final Replay"on the cover? Yes, the title of the product page now says Grand Final but it doesn't on the AFL web site where the title is: Richmond Tigers 2017 Premiers BluRay DVD. Am I being obtuse? Surely, if it's a replay of the Grand Final it should say so.

DVDLand product description now clearly shows it's the grand final:

This is the 2017 AFL Grand Final DVD showing every single minute of the big game of the Adelaide Crows vs Richmond Tigers.

The 2017 Toyota AFL Grand Final DVD features all the action from the big day, along with exclusive bonus features with the Richmond Tigers winning the flag over the Adelaide Crows.

For the Richmond Football Club faithful it's been a long wait, but it's finally Tiger Time once again! Richmond are AFL Premiers with victory in the 2017 Toyota AFL Grand Final delivering the club's historic first Premiership in 37 years.

After a disappointing season in 2016, Richmond was determined to make amends but few expected such a dramatic turnaround in fortunes.

Led by head coach Damien Hardwick, the Tigers' of 2017 stunned critics and opponents alike with their unrelenting pressure and unconventional forward line featuring star forward Jack Riewoldt flanked by Daniel Rioli, Dan Butler, and Jason Castagna, and ably supported by peerless midfielder Dustin Martin, club captain Trent Cotchin, ruckman Toby Nankervis and All-Australian captain Alex Rance.

A third-place finish, the club's best for over 20 years, secured a Qualifying Final berth against the Geelong Cats; and in front of over 95,000 fans at the 'G, the rampant Tigers tamed the Cats to earn a week off.

Facing young guns GWS Giants in the Preliminary Final, Richmond dug deep to clinch the win and a set up a mouth-watering Grand Final against the high-flying Adelaide Crows / a resurgent Geelong Cats.

And on an historic afternoon in front of a packed house at the MCG the Tigers roared to victory, hoisting the coveted AFL Premiership Cup and sparking celebrations across Tigerland.

The description suggests its coverage of the 2017 season not the grand final itself.

In hindsight, even though it was 2 weeks after the game it was too early for retailers.

Interestingly, there is no 'DVD' or 'video' category in any of the navigation drop-downs on either the AFL or RFC web sites. It would be expected in "More"or maybe Gift & Novelty. DVD's cannot be found using search either.
