Nestled in the vibrant Hardware Lane is East China Trading Company, Melbourne's newest cocktail, dumpling and rum bar opened by friend's Adam Ong and Michael Chen.
East China Trading Company takes its heritage from the trading companies of Old World Shanghai and acts as the 'front' for its more libertine sister establishment below, the iconic and newly revamped Golden Monkey.
East China Trading Company is modern and vintage all at once with a charming warehouse feel to it. Grabbing your immediate attention is a ceiling-high back bar inspired by Asian architecture and housing over 150 rare and unique rums. Stripped-back walls, soft table lamp lighting, ceiling fans and rustic wooden booths lined in emerald green cushions complete the look.
The drinks come in three separate menus. The first is centred around the venue's trading company premise with categories of cocktails based on some of the world's most highly traded consumable commodities. Think coffee, tea, spices and sugar.
The second menu mirrors the first but without any of the booze, giving the non-drinkers as broad a choice as anyone. Martinis, Sours and Old-Fashioneds get the booze-free treatment.
The third menu serves as a new age rum manifest. The bars imposing collection of over 150 rums are categorised by production method, which is a game changer in contrast to the industry norm of simply clumping together rums by colour and origin. This menu also features over 50 of history's finest rum cocktails such as Daiquiris, Swizzles, Palmettos, and Mai Tai's that can be enjoyed using the rum of your choice.
The bar also offers great wines, craft beers, cold-pressed fresh juices and a selection of some of the finest teas from China served to their precise brewing temperatures and times.
When it comes to food, signature steamed dumplings and traditional Chinese bao are served all day, every day, from open till close. So whether for a quick dim sum lunch, some steaming hot salt & pepper soybeans during an afternoon break, or full dumpling feast dinner with complimenting cocktails, East China Trading Company has got you covered no matter when your cravings kick in.
