East Imperial Chinese Restaurant |
The proprietor's of Mao's in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, bring a fine-dining experience to the Italian-dominated Carlton restaurant scene with East Imperial, a modern multi-region presentation of Chinese cuisine. The sophisticated elegance of this architecturally designed space is inspired by the story of the Chinese First Emperor Qin who is depicted in sculptures throughout the restaurant's many rooms. The decor is serene and exquisite with teak furniture, beaded screens, river stones and sculpturesque lotus candles giving off a soft light.
Flute music plays softly to complement the culinary offerings which include a daily yum cha lunch, separate banquet and vegetarian menus and the much-requested Peking duck (crispy duck in plum sauce, wrapped in a thin pancake and accompanied by a cucumber and onion salad).
An impressive big wine list, mostly quality offerings sourced directly from Australian growers, is available for purchase by the glass or the bottlewith fair value.
East Imperial won the best Yum Cha in city (Herald Sun March 02, 2008) and The Age Good Food Guide 06, 07, 08
