Forum Melbourne

Forum Melbourne

Situated in the heart of Melbourne's CBD on Flinders Street, the Forum Theatre with its unique Gothic-Romanesque architecture, is the place-to-be for live performances of various artists, both local and international.

The Forum Theatre's exterior has an exotic design that continues as you step through the doors. Lavish moulded plaster, gold paint and reproduction casts of famous Greek and Italian sculptures line an auditorium interior topped with a soaring blue ceiling punched with stars designed to look like an open sky.

Formerly the State Theatre, the Forum Theatre opened in 1929 with the largest seating capacity of any theatre in Australia.

The Forum hosts cabaret, rock concerts and the annual Melbourne Film Festival.

Restoration

The Forum Melbourne has undergone interior restoration and refurbishment (2023), with additonal work required on the exterior.

While Heritage Victoria is within its rights to investigate and report on buildings, it needs to be realistic. Without the Marriner Group, the building would be sold for its land and bulldozed. Heritage overlays are not going to save a building if no-one wants to buy it. Companies like Conservation Studio may subscribe to the conservation of buildings but have a vested interest.

We are very lucky to have the Marriner Group!
