NOW OPEN @ Melbourne Museum

Explore Victoria's ancient landscapes and learn about creatures that once walked this land, from dinosaurs and megafauna to the ancestors of today's iconic Australian species.

The Gandel Gondwana Garden is an outdoor gallery where you can step into the ecosystems of the past. Touch replicas of the bones, teeth and claws of ancient creatures. Experience First Peoples' knowledge passed through thousands of generations, and uncover traces of Gondwana, the supercontinent that once connected Australia to the world.

What is Gondwana?

Gondwana was a huge landmass that formed over 500 million years ago. Instead of the continents we know today, much of the land of the Southern Hemisphere was pushed together into this one, huge supercontinent.

Back then complex life was just getting started. Over the next 300 million years, Gondwana would become home to all manner of prehistoric animals and plants-the ancestors of life on Earth today.

About 180 million years ago, Gondwana began to break apart. This happened very slowly, but eventually we ended up with the continents we recognise today: Australia, Africa, South America, Antarctica, India and the Arabian Peninsula.
