As much as we'd love to claim the award winning actor Geoffrey Rush as a Melburnian, he was born on July 6, 1951, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
Having said that, he has resided in a leafy Melbourne suburb with his family for many years so we'll claim the wonderfully talented performer as one of ours..
Geoffrey Rush has has celebrated 40 years as an actor, achieving the rare international distinction of the 'Triple Crown' - an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy and named Australian of the Year in 2012.
He is best known for his award-winning performance in the 1996 film Shine. Other roles include the TV feature The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2005) and Captain Hector Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series (2003-2011). He was also an executive producer of the Academy Award-winning The King's Speech (2010).
He is Patron of the Melbourne International Film Festival; of Toowoomba's Empire Theatre Foundation; Spina Bifida Foundation Victoria. He is an Ambassador for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and UNICEF Australia. In 2011 he became foundation President of the Australian Academy Of Cinema and Television Arts.
Geoffrey Rush met actress Jane Menelaus on a tour of The Importance of Being Earnest. They married in 1988 and had daughter Angelica (1992) and son James (1995). Rush and his family reside in Camberwell where he is well known for his involvement in the local community.
