Go Kart Club of Victoria
Almost forty years ago a number of keen and dedicated go kart racers would conduct their racing in any spare parking lot about the Sandringham / Mentone area and thrill the spectators dodging hay bails and any other form of barrier control. Names like Price, Smith, Corman, Maddox were common amongst the karters in those days and are now the parenting kind to those common within the industry today.
They were the forefathers of karting in Melbourne and were of great visionary status for they paved the way for many of the facilities we have today and set a basic structure for the sport of kart racing. Clubs soon emerged in areas like Dandenong and Brooklyn.
The Go Kart Club of Victoria is amongst the oldest of established clubs in Australia and is the oldest established club in Victoria.
Whilst our roots may have been established in the vacant carparks of the South Eastern suburbs much of our competitive history was established at Brooklyn near Geelong Road. For over 25 years, the fierce competition raged by up and coming motor racing names like Ingall, Faulkner, Seton, Lowndes, Bright, Skaife, Price and the like did battle at Brooklyn, competing in Victorian Open Championships, City of Melbourne Titles and the awesomely fierce Star Series that ran for many years for the metro clubs.
In 1995 the club relocated to Port Melbourne following the sale of land at Brooklyn by the owners. The Todd Road site was selected following an exhaustive evaluation of potential sites in and around Melbourne. The new venue offered close proximity to all major arterial roads and the ability to create a high profile open events with the ultimate events, the CIK Oceania Championships being successfully hosted at the club in January 1997.
Since the track opened in 1995 there have been many successful and memorable events at the track with the City of Melbourne Titles uppermost in most karter's minds as a "must do"event for the year. The club takes great pride in the ability to organise high quality karting events and contribute regulary at State Karting Council level to offer direction and stability into our karting rules and operation.
Today the GKCV is the largest club in Victoria, and the second largest within Australia.
