Hank's Brings Filled Bagels, Maple Iced Lattes and Malteser Milkshakes to Beatty Avenue, Armadale
The crew behind Mammoth and Copycat has a new venue, with a name borrowed from a favourite Breaking Bad character and bagels inspired by "the greatest city in the world".
As of yesterday, Armadale's Beatty Avenue is home to a new bagel joint. It's by Nick Beerens (who co-owns Mammoth and Copycat), general Adele McMurray and executive chef Kevin Middleton.
Hank's Bagelry, named after Breaking Bad character Hank Schrader, was created to fill a void not quite covered by the team's pre-existing Beatty Avenue cafe. "[Mammoth] is all about the dine-in food - our sandwich game isn't as strong as it could be," Nick tells Broadsheet.
Hank's has no such problem. Onion, seeded, plain, challah and gluten-free bagels are all available, supplied by Balaclava's Savion. Middleton serves classic fillings, like cream cheese, house-made jam, and bacon and egg, alongside some exciting new creations and twists on old favourites. Try the beetroot-and-gin-cured salmon with herbs, red onion and cream cheese, or the harissa-roasted pumpkin with almond feta, hummus and wild rocket. There's also a pork and fennel sausage option, with caramelised onions, mustard mayo and tomato relish.
Once you've chosen your bagel, choose from pickles, crisps or hot chips as a side. You can also get a filter coffee for $2 with any bagel order. Beans come from Inglewood Coffee Roasters, with the usual espresso drinks available alongside a fun maple iced latte. The US vibes continue on the sweets menu, which includes house-made cookies and a range of milkshakes inspired by US burger chain Shake Shack - choose from Malteser, Biscoff or peanut butter flavours.
The interior was designed by Leftfield Studio. The team kept the building's heritage bones and stained-glass windows while incorporating blue-steel accents and subway tiles as a subtle nod to New York. There's a number of dine-in tables and bar top seats available, and summer will see an extended amount of outdoor seating open up, as Hank's Bagelry joins the likes of Toorak Cellars and Neighbourhood Pizza in Beatty Avenue's summer outdoor-dining initiative.
This is just the beginning for Hank's, though, with plans to extend the menu in summer to offer concretes: frozen custard blended with different toppings.
