Houdini-Centenary Air Show |
Houdini's achievement of Australia's first powered controlled flight will be commemorated at the
Houdini-Centenary Air Show in March 2010 with a 3 day festival of flight.
At dawn on 18 March 1910 famous American escapologist Harry Houdini made the first Australian powered, controlled, sustained flight of an aircraft in Australia at Plumpton Dam, Diggers Rest.
THERE were only a handful of witnesses when Harry Houdini made history over a Diggers Rest paddock 100 years ago. They watched as a fragile box kite, with wooden struts and cloth panels framing a tiny engine, flew for three minutes and 30 seconds, reaching a height of 100 feet.
Come and walk around beautifully restored aircraft and meet the pilots who fly them, look at vintage and rally cars.
Children's entertainment includes aircraft making and many other activities.
Come and see the displays and meet the people who make aviation what it is today.
Profits will go to the Angel Flight charity, which flies sick and disadvantaged people to hospital. Admission is $20 for adults, $10 concession and children under 12 free. The other two festival days have free entry.
On Thursday, March 18, there will be a commemoration ceremony at Stan Payne Reserve in Diggers Rest, including a talk about Houdini, an illusionist performance and the unveiling of a new sculpture.
On Sunday, March 21, at Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve there will be a family day with rides, magicians, kite-making, bands and a vintage car show.
On all three days, Melton resident Ian Satur will display a one-third-scale replica of Houdini's 1910 plane that he built.
WHEN: 18-20 March 2010 - 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
LOCATION: Melton Airfield, Coburns Rd, Melton.
