Kew Railway Line | 1887 - 1957 |
The Kew Railway line was 1.5 km long and had two stations: Kew Station just south of Kew Junction on Denmark Street, Kew and Barkers Station on Hawthorn Grove, Hawthorn.
The Kew line opened on the 19th December 1887, ceased operations in August 1952 and closed on the 13th May 1957 and demolished a short time later.
Both stations were impressive brick buildings and reflected the wealth and confidence that characterised Melbourne in the 1880's.
There was a level crossing over Barkers Road just before Barkers Station.
The Kew line branched from Hawthorn after Barkers Station although there was no service. The section between Barkers Station and the Hawthorn line had a level crossing over Hawthorn Grove and four road overbridges (no longer): Linda Crescent, Chrystobel Crescent, Mary Street, and Kinkora Road.
After the Kew line closed, Kew Station on Denmark St was a baby health centre for several years then Country Roads Board / VicRoads until 2024.
Kew Railway was never part of the Outer Circle Railway or Inner Circle line but plans were made to connect them either by tunnel under Kew or along High St. East Kew Station was part of the Outer Circle Railway line.
