Killer motorist takes a drive - Aries Galle |
21 June 2003 - KILLER P-plater Aries Galle was back behind the wheel yesterday just days after admitting guilt over a deadly high-speed stunt.
Galle, 22, killed nurse Elfie Gattringer while speeding over a railway crossing in a bid to become airborne. His car did take off -- and slammed into Ms Gattringer's vehicle.
But the aspiring punk-rock DJ is still driving.
He is exploiting a loophole that prevents police taking his licence because he was free of drugs and alcohol at the time of the fatal crash.
He jumped into his car at 4.10pm yesterday for a five-minute drive from his home at Tannaroo Cres, Delahey, to a nearby shopping centre.
The Herald Sun yesterday called for the Government to close the loophole swiftly before others were injured.
The Government and the Opposition refused to comment last night, saying the case was not over.
But Ms Gattringer's close friend, Sue Hooper, said Galle lost the right to hold a licence when he killed her friend, 58.
"If you can take someone off the road because they are full of grog, why can't you take someone off the road who has killed someone?"she asked.
"It is a concern because I don't think people know. There must be other parents, husbands, loved ones, who feel badly about this but can't do anything about it."
A spokeswoman for Assistant Commissioner Ray Shuey refused to comment other than to say police were bound by current laws. "We don't have the power to remove the man's licence at this stage and we must comply with the legislation,"she said.
Documents tendered to the Melbourne Magistrates' Court revealed Galle asked police only 20 minutes after the October 7, 2001 crash whether his car would be looked after.
"Will the mags (wheels) be safe? They are worth a packet,"he allegedly said.
Mario Bonanno, a passenger in Galle's car, said he pleaded with his friend to slow down and let him out of the car before Galle again sped over the Essendon railway crossing minutes before the crash.
"But he doesn't listen. It is like talking to a brick wall,"he said.
He said Ms Gattringer had no chance of avoiding the collision.
Galle was released on bail on Wednesday after pleading guilty to a charge of culpable driving causing death.
He was ordered to appear at the County Court next month.
