La Trobe's Arrival | 170th Anniversary |
On 3 October 2009, Friends of La Trobe's Cottage re-enacted La Trobe's arrival at Port Phillip.
Charles Joseph La Trobe took over from Captain Lonsdale and assumed the position of Superintendent until 1851 and then Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria until 1854.
He purchased 12.5 acres of Yarra Park for the erection of his private residence, Victoria's first government house. The area was later subdivided for the residential housing of Jolimont.
Helen Botham, chair of the newly formed Friends of La Trobe's Cottage said the anniversary marked the reopening of the cottage for public viewings and regular group tours.
The historic house is located on the corner of Birdwood Avenue and Dallas Brooks Drive, Melbourne. The organisation comes under the umbrella of The C.J. La Trobe Society but reports directly to the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). Its aims and objectives are to support the National Trust in maintaining the cottage and to work towards improving the interpretation of the historic fabric of the cottage.
