The Lifted Brow is an independent Australian magazine. We present the best and least usual new writing, art, and music. We believe in maintaining a venue for art that is not reliant on extensive advertising, or funding from a university, company, or government body.
About The Lifted Brow
Some of our writers have reputations. These include Tao Lin and Dean Bakopoulos from North America, and Alasdair Duncan, Christopher Somerville, Chris Currie, Peter Minter, and Thomas Benjamin Guerney from Australia. Most of our writers are rough, awesome and totally new.The musicians are Ambitious Lovers, BigStrongBrute, Carry Nation, To the North, Shiver Like Timber, Marlinchen, Capital, Joel Saunders, A Man Called Son, The Night Crash, Genevieve Graves, Shakes, Rialto Decibel Choir and The Tiny Animal. Some of these guys gave us rare tracks; most recorded new songs just for us.
Our better-known artists are Ben Constantine (Plump Oyster) and Mel Stringer (Girlie Pains). They close the magazine with a long, beautiful, unsettling collaborative comic.
There are also four simple recipes, a cut-and-keep stencil of a virus attacking a city, and a number of bilingual pages. It is illustrated throughout with flip-book animation in which a dancing bear is eaten by a shark.
