Lyrebird Track |
Lyrebird Track extends 4.8km to the left of the 1000 Steps and provides a moderate walk to the top of One Tree Hill picnic ground.
The path is steep and beautiful, which makes it attractive to fitness walkers and tourists however please leave your dog at home, as this walk is not for your pets.
Lyrebird Track
Grants Picnic Ground starting point: Facing towards Grants on Sherbrooke cafe, walk to the left about 60 metres to see the entrance on the right to the Lyrebird walk and Hardy Gully Nature Trail.
Pass through the gates and turn right onto the pretty Hardy Gully Nature Trail which does a small loop and rejoins the main Lyrebird Walk trail.
Where Hardy Gully meets up with the main track again, turn right and continue. Follow to the next junction of tracks and keep on the left trail (Lyrebird Walk) to do this walk in a clockwise direction. It loops back to this point along Newman Track, so either way is fine to go.
Lyrebird Walk joins into Hall Track which runs alongside Grantulla Road for a short distance before arriving at Neuman Track where you then turn to the right and continue for a km or so.
At the next junction, go right along Newman Track to complete the loop or extend the walk by turning left and following Paddy's Track, which has steep sections and ads on a few km's to the hike.

Lyrebird Track by Weekendnotes
The walk begins from the Ferntree Gully picnic ground where you walk under the Kokoda Memorial Archway, and continues past the playground.
You will then notice 4 big pillars with the words mateship, courage, sacrifice and endurance; these 4 words have great meaning for the diggers and also for past and present ADF personnel for whom the memorial represents. On the other side of the pillars is a large amount of information about the Second World War and the Australian spirit.
Beyond this you will come to a fork in the path, the left is the start to the Lyrebird Track and to the right is the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk.
The Lyrebird Track is a little longer than the 1000 Steps 2.5km compared to 1.8km (one way) but both end in the same place at One Tree Hill, so you can turn it into a circuit and go up one way then down the other.
The differences between the two tracks is the 1000 Steps follows the river and goes through fern gullies and the scenery is beautiful, whilst the Lyrebird Track is more open and surrounded by gum trees and more resembles a fire trail.
Whilst the Lyrebird Track isn't as scenic as the 1000 Steps, and is a little steeper, there are also fewer people. So it depends on if your there purely for fitness or for both scenery and fitness to which track is the better of the two?

How to get there
Public transport:
Take the Belgrave line train and get off at Upper Ferntree Gully station, walk east following the Burwood Highway to the Ferntree Gully picnic grounds entrance which is near the intersection of Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd. The walk starts approximately 1km from the train station.
By car:
Enter the car park from Burwood Highway, there are plenty of parking spaces but it's very busy on weekends. My tip is to park at the train station which is an easy walk to the picnic grounds.
Dogs are not allowed in the Dandenong Ranges National Park.
