Manifold Heights 3218

Manifold Heights is a suburb between Geelong West and Herne Heights, about 2 km. west-north-west of Geelong.

Its western boundary is Shannon Avenue, formerly the West Melbourne Road (i.e. the western-most of two roads from Geelong to Melbourne). It was immediately on the border of the villages which first comprised Geelong West.

Manifold Heights was occupied by the pastoral squatters Thomas and Peter Manifold (1836). Although the Manifolds went further west in a few years for pastoral expansion, the 1850 rate book recorded Manifold Heights as being occupied by Manifold's vineyard.

Estates were subdivided in Herne Heights and Manifold Heights during the previous century, but it was the 1920s before much housing was built in Manifold Heights. In 1926 a primary school was opened. The Holy Spirit Catholic church and the Presbyterian church were opened in 1939.

A shopping area grew along Shannon Avenue, and it has become a substantial shopping strip.

Manifold Heights' median house price in 1987 was $66,900, and in 1996 it was $112,500, putting it at the upper end of house prices in the Geelong area.
