Melbourne Curiosities

There are some quite interesting but lesser known spots in Melbourne to spend an hour now known as Melbourne Curiosities.

Area of Solitude for Missing People - With Hope in Our Hearts

A bench located in Carlton Gardens stands as a memorial for the 30,000 people reported missing every year! It is peacefully located under a large tree overlooking a small pond just near the Royal Exhibition Buildings.

National Missing Persons

Victoria Police Memorial

Opened in 2002 by the Chief Commissioner of Police, Christine Nixon, APM, the Victoria Police Memorial situated in Kings Domain Gardens, Melbourne, stands as a dedication and constant reminder of the service provided by those brave men and women who have been killed in the line of duty.

Remember Blue Ribbon - perpetuates the memory of members of the Victoria Police killed in the line of duty through the support of worthwhile community projects within Victoria.

Batman's Hill Marker

This rather odd feature marks the spot where John Batman built one of the first houses in Melbourne atop Pleasant Hill [later Batmans Hill] that was subsequently flattened to make way for Spencer Street Station [now Southern Cross Station].

Southern Cross Station

Batman's Hill was the starting point, or datum point, from which Melbourne was mapped. Hoddle's survey equipment comprised a circumferentor and surveyor's chain of prescribed length: 1 chain = 66 feet or 20.12 metres - the length of a standard cricket pitch.

Other unique spots nearby are Mission to Seafarers, Queen's Warehouse, Classic Car Collection, Stadium Precinct, Docklands,
