Founded in 1953 Melbourne Theatre Company is the oldest professional theatre company in Australia and is a semi-autonomous department of the University of Melbourne.

It is not only Victoria's major theatre company and one of the major performing arts companies in Australia but one of the largest theatre companies in the English-speaking world.

MTC produce up to twelve Mainstage productions each year an annual education program and host NEON Festival of Independent Theatre.

Melbourne Theatre Company productions are regularly staged across two iconic complexes Southbank Theatre and Arts Centre Melbourne which are located close together in Melbourne's Arts Precinct in Southbank.

Our home The MTC Theatre (Southbank Theatre) hosts Mainstage productions in the 500-seat Sumner Theatre and a Studio Season of new and developing works in the 150-seat Lawler Studio.

Our long association with the Arts Centre continues with the Playhouse hosting our large-scale works while more intimate dramas will go into the Fairfax Studio.
