As part of Victoria's Big Build, the Metro Tunnel will bring more trains to your suburb and reduce travel times by running the busy Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines through a new tunnel. By untangling the City Loop, more trains can run more often across Melbourne.
It has finished digging twin 9km tunnels, and construction is underway on 5 new stations and testing of the new High Capacity Signalling system that will enable turn-up-and-go services. The Metro Tunnel will open in 2025, a year ahead of schedule.
Stations
The Metro Tunnel includes five new underground stations, with two new city stations directly connected to Flinders Street and Melbourne Central.
New High Capacity Trains will run through the Metro Tunnel, freeing up more trains across the Melbourne rail network.
New underground stations at North Melbourne, Parkville, State Library at the northern end of Swanston Street, Town Hall at the southern end of Swanston Street and Anzac on St Kilda Road will transform the way people move around Melbourne and improve access to key landmarks and destinations.
The two stations under Swanston Street will be directly connected to the City Loop at Melbourne Central and Flinders Street Station.
The Melbourne Metro Rail Project is the construction of a rail tunnel from South Kensington station to South Yarra under the city of Melbourne.
Works commenced in late 2016 under a Andrews (Labor) Government, with major construction starting in 2018 and completion in 2026.
