Muscular Dystrophy Australia

Muscular Dystrophy Australia

Muscular Dystrophy Australia (MDA) was established in 1984 as a support group for families who were affected by Muscular Dystrophy (MD).

The growth of MDA has been commensurate with the societal need to provide increasing relevant support programs, services and information to MD clients and the wider community.

Today, MDA is regarded as the peak lay agency and is committed to providing an outstanding service that supports the one in every 625 people in society who are affected by MD or a related neuromuscular disorder.

Within Victoria, that support includes information provision; case coordination; the conduct of respite, social and recreational activities; education and training; as well as the promotion of medical, scientific and social research. Nationally, MDA provides a free MD information service, respite access and is developing a National 'Cough Assist' equipment loan library.

Internationally, MDA also provides hope to those with MD via its promotion and resourcing of medical and scientific research at the National Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (NMDRC) and at other peer research organisations.

MDA differs from many other charitable institutions that provide some similar services in that services and support provided by MDA addresses all aspects of MD for the life of the client. Many of the other organisations only cover a single aspect of support such as respite, aides and equipment or counselling. MDA has the holistic corporate knowledge of MD and coordinates all available services and support and seeks to satisfy identified service gaps.
