School Holiday Guide
ACMI's Wii Championships are free to enter with great prizes awarded on the weekend of July 5th and 6th. With Wii Tennis and Wii Bowling played on the Big Screen, it will be Melbourne's first public Wii Sports competition. Have fun and test your skills!

Fun in Retirement Expo - Retirees and those nearing retirement can enjoy the Fun in Retirement Expo this week, held at the Boroondara Sports Complex from Saturday. Presented by North Balwyn's Rotary Club, the expo will run until next Monday, featuring over 100 individual exhibitors displaying a wide range of products and services of interest to local residents in, or nearing, retirement. Entry is only $2 to the event.
Little Big Shots, Australia's annual children's film festival, will be appearing Frankston's Boulevard Events Centre this week, with screenings running from Friday to Sunday. Perfect for families and kids aged 2 to 18, the films screening in Little Big Shots inspire discussion of world cultures, language, cultural diversity and more. Festival highlights will also be showing as part of Warrnambool's Fun4Kids festival.
Fun4Kids Children's Festival - Australia's best children's festival, Fun4Kids continues this week, running until Sunday in Warrnambool where a massive 2.5 acre indoor village plays host to the finest local and international child entertainers as well as offering cutting edge music and theatre workshops. It includes kids' live performances by Angelina Ballerina, Dorothy the Dinosaur and much more.
Emerge Festival features screenings at ACMI this Friday and Sunday of short films by young African artists. Presented by Multicultural Arts Victoria, the festival celebrates Victoria's many diverse refugee and emerging cultures in a series of exciting events, exhibitions and concerts around Melbourne that will run until July 20th. With events from the traditional to the contemporary, the festival has something for all.
The Light in Winter, the lighting display currently held at Federation Square, features the special screening of 'When Gods Came Down To Earth,' running 24 hours a day. Created by international artist and filmmaker, Srinivas Krishna, the public display features images of Hindu Gods, exploring the mystic beauty of the deities. The Light in Winter will be on public show until July 5, with displays beginning each evening at dusk.
Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show
Senoritas, an exhibition on new work by Aida Sabic, will be showing at Collingwood gallery, Per Square Metre. Progressing from previous work that was portrait based, Aida has created beautiful and expressive characters. The opening will be held Friday.
Helbourne is an exhibition of text and image that tells a narrative of five people who are thrust together by unseen currents of coincidence over one winter evening. Set within select bars, cafes and retail stores of Melbourne, the exhibition ends July 13.
Melbourne-SCAPES, an exhibition currently running at Obscura Gallery in St Kilda, combines the work of five photographers and their unique visions of Melbourne. Photos included feature iconic lane-ways, the Docklands precinct and other aspects of Melbourne.
Darwin with Tears celebrates Lyndal Jones' successful career at the forefront of Australian video and performance art. Showing at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, it includes work that represented Australia at the 2001 Venice Biennale.
Expos
Docklands Bridal Spectacular takes place at Telstra Dome this Sunday with the last major bridal exhibition for 2008. Featuring over 200 suppliers on display, the event showcases all that's needed for wedding planning along with a bridal fashion parade.
Melbourne Winter Boat Show begins this Thursday, running until next Monday at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. With displays from the best in the marine business, the show offers something for enthusiasts of water skiing, wakeboarding, fishing, cruising and more.
Arts & Theatre
Interviews with Famous People sees actors Melanie Sharp and Darren Lever use various theatrical methods to recreate celebrity interviews. Blurring the lines between the lives and thoughts of the famous and the ordinary, the show runs at Carlton's La Mama.
The Thing About Men is a moving but light-hearted musical comedy from the writers of the successful play, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. A story of infidelity and the many complications it brings, the show begins Thursday at St Kilda's Theatreworks.
Some Girl(s) is the Australian premiere of Neil LaBute's comedy in which one man makes a cross-country trip to make amends for wronging four former girlfriends. Offering a humorous look at sexual politics, it runs until July 6 at Chapel Off Chapel in Prahran.
Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire's novel, is the hit musical that tells the untold story of the legendary witches from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Now playing at the Regent Theatre, the show reveals the surprising past of the supposedly Wicked Witch.
Boeing-Boeing, starring Shaun Micallef, is one of the most enjoyable and mischievously funny shows to hit Melbourne in years. Offering a seriously sexy and funny twist on classic comedy, performances have been extended at the Comedy Theatre, running until July 5.
The Children's Bach, based on Helen Garner's renowned novel, finds its home on the stage in a new opera about family, sex and housework. Set on the banks of Merri Creek, ChamberMade's production runs at Southbank's CUB Malthouse until July 5.
Scarlett O'Hara at the Crimson Parrot, written by David Williamson, tells the story of Scarlett, a woman whose imagination helps her escape a job that is all too dull. Starring Caroline O'Connor in the title role, the whimsical play runs till July 12 at the Arts Centre.
Concert Performances
Diamond Valley Singers will be presenting their new performance, Kismet at Warrandyte High School Theatre, beginning Thursday. With shows running until July 12, Kismet features classic Broadway songs. Proceeds will go to World Vision and Open House.
Selby & Friends will present a concert this Wednesday at Melba Hall, performing chamber music classics by Mozart, Dvoøak and Schubert as part of their Winter program. Acclaimed concert pianist, Kathryn Selby and cellist, Julian Smiles be joined by violinist, Niki Vasilakis.
The Miscellany Ensemble will be performing a special Family Friendly Concert on Sunday, playing music that's sure to enchant listeners of all ages. With guests, Kathryn Moorhead and harpist Megan Reeve, it takes place at Box Hill Community Arts Centre.
Entertainment & Nightlife
Winterpark, whose songs have featured in the crime series, Underbelly (don't pretend you didn't download it!) will perform songs from their second album, soon to be released. Playing Thursday at Melbourne bar, Pogo, support includes Jaguar Spring and On Like Kong.
Live @ Blvd - Airway Lanes will be performing at Southbank's BLVD Bar this Thursday, showcasing songs that feature lyrics with a very human depth from their new album, In Vino Veritas. Support acts on the night include Lloyd Spiegel and Charlie.
Live Comedy
Not Quite Right is the latest performance by ABC Radio host and Melbourne comedian, Toby Sullivan. Exploring life with his husband, the fact that Toby's approaching a rather balding 40, and how he came to be in Sydney for a day, the show will run at Trades Hall until July 12.
The Quanzhou Marionette Troupe, one of China's great cultural treasures, will be visiting Australia for a limited performance season at the Chinese Museum, showcasing Chinese marionette history dating back 2,000 years. Running from June 28 to July 4, master puppeteers will beautiful puppets creating lifelike portrayals of men and women, spirits and wild animals in the stunning traditional shows.
Disney On Ice - Join Mickey and Minnie on a sightseeing tour of the imagination as they travel to five amazing destinations - all in one action-packed ice show! Held at Rod Laver Arena from July 2 to 7, the magical show is full of excitement, humour, friendship and much more, as your tour guides Mickey & Minnie, take you through picture-postcard worlds packed with surprises and familiar guests.
Luna Freeze - Luna Park will be making the most of the winter months with Melbourne's newest ice skating venue, held in the middle of Luna Park's Winter Wonderland. With ice-skating set to cool tunes and all under dazzling lights, Luna Freeze runs until October.
Circus Shows
Circus Oz, Melbourne's very own international stars, are celebrating 30 years with a high-energy spectacular that thrives with colour, comedy and breathtaking feats designed to excite audiences of all ages. Pushing the boundaries of conventional circus their show blends imagery, contemporary music and comedy with a live band. They will be performing at Birrarung Marr with shows running until July 13.

Originally intended as a memorial arch that would span across St Kilda Rd, it was also proposed at one point that the Shrine of Remembrance instead be a cenotaph in a large "ANZAC Square"at the top of Bourke Street.
As this would have also included demolishing one of Melbourne's oldest buildings, the Windsor Hotel, the 1927 ANZAC Day march was also held as a demonstration, led by General Sir John Monash, former commander of the Australian forces.
