Newsletter | #257 | What's On this Week

Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, December 6 to 12.

This week... Christmas truly gets a mistletoe-hold on the calendar as we enter into the quiet period where many thespians and artists take a hiatus and make way for carols and more renditions of Handel's Messiah than you could poke a candy cane at.

Those who are partial to the Yartz and all it entails can still make good for now, however, with special presentations from the ARTillery Human Rights Festival and Made In Melbourne Film Festival.

Also on the cinematic side of things, the turn of weather brings with it a fine selection of outdoor screenings with the St Kilda Openair Cinema, now flying under the banner of Ben & Jerry's Openair Cinema.

With the end of the school year fast approaching, our School Holiday Guide will be out next week, bigger and better than ever with plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained. I had a taste of what's to come when I thought it safe to doze off with a book on the weekend while sitting in the sun-room. It was all fine when the wee lass realised I'd dozed off and she had the decency to quietly close the door and leave me be.

Not ten minutes later, the lads soon cottoned on to my napping and startled me awake to find them both creeping up like a pair of ruthless hyenas stalking a weary grown-up by the watering hole.

Just as stealthy are the many dance events and recitals that you'll find sneaking their way into the limelight, what with the aforementioned lull on the theatre front. There's a good few dance events this week, most notably the Australian DanceSport Championship at Hisense Arena and gala recitals held at Thornbury Theatre and the Palais Theatre, located in Ben & Jerry's.

Ahead On The Shopping Block..

'Doing the Block' - that's the, as opposed to your (or one's as they might have once said, and excuse the lengthy digression) - was once a common expression bandied about Melbourne, used to describe the act of strolling through Melbourne's shopping arcades, The Block and Royal Arcade.

Coined in the late 1800's, the phrase came about when it was a favourite pastime of Melburnians to stroll up and down this section of Collins Street in the late afternoon or on Saturday mornings, making the area a place that offered not only the most elegant shopping experience of its time, but also a hub where it was fashionable to be seen.

Many, many decades later, with the advent of BMX Bikes and wayward youths, the phrase was surpassed by that of the much less elegant, 'Wanna go hang at the Milk Bar?'
