Northcote Harvest Market |
Darebin Council has approved a three month trial of Northcote Farmers' Market to be held in the grounds of Northcote High School.
The market will be run by Local Harvest Markets, a not-for-profit member of the Victorian Farmers' Markets Association, and provides NHS with exciting and profitable fund-raising opportunities.
The trial will run on Sunday mornings, starting early in 2011.
Darebin Mayor Vince Fontana is quoted as saying that the new market is only at the trial stage and if the trial is not successful it won't continue. There's been some interest in the community from people wanting something like this. The nearest farmer's markets are currently at Fairfield and Bundoora.
Initially the market was to be held in Merri Park until local residents speaking for the wider community quoted parking, over-use and not enough space as grounds for moving it.
Typically, half a dozen local residents quoted as 'not being involved in the planning process' were up-in-arms about the announcement with one even taking a potshot at the principal of Northcote High School, after the market was moved from Merri Park to the high school.
NHS has neogitated the rights to take gold coin entrance donations at the gate and to run a
weekly barbecue. All funds raised go directly to the school.
