Olympic Games Melbourne | State Library of Victoria

The State Library of Victoria's 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games exhibition site explores the history of Australia's first experience hosting an Olympic Games and the impact it had on Australia as a nation.

Discover how Melbourne won the right to host the Games from The Games Bid. Some of the issues and problems involved in organising the Games are described in Preparations and Melbourne and the World.

Revisit some of the great moments in The Games. The Melbourne Games became known as The Friendly Games yet were held at a time of extreme international political tension summarised in World Events. But after all the problems, the sixteen days from 22 November until 8 December 1956 left an enduring legacy not only for Melbourne and Australia but for the Olympic movement itself.

The Library contains a wealth of material about the Melbourne Olympics, including original manuscripts, programs, souvenirs, photographs, official publications produced by the Olympic Organising Committee and many books, newspapers and periodicals relating to the Games. For more information about our collections use the Bibliography.

Resources contains a miscellany of items that can be used for reference or navigation of this site. Bibliographies, facts and figures, a guest book and search engine are some of the features available. Also provided are links to other Web resources on the Olympic Games.
