Palace Theatre

The Palace Theatre is Australia's premier entertainment, live music and function venue located in the heart of Melbourne's business and tourism district.

The Palace Theatre is located at the 'top' end of Bourke Street in the heart of the theatre district of Melbourne's CBD.

The venue still holds its original charm from the early 1900's with some architectural changes taking place to improve the theatre's aesthetics & performance facilities.

We are fast becoming Melbourne's number one live entertainment location with hundreds of acts performing each year and thousands of patrons passing through the doors.

CLOSURE

A century afer it opened, tomorrow night's show (17/05/2014) will be the last at the Palace Theatre, formerly the Metro, in Bourke Street.

A big yellow poster stuck out the front of the Bourke Street entrance advertises the owner's bid to have the building demolished to make way for a fivestar hotel.

On Saturday night a final show will be held at the theatre, more than 100 years after it was first opened as Brennan's Amphitheatre . The venue's operators are preparing to sell to everything, following an unsuccessful bid to extend their lease.

It is a gloomy conclusion for the former disco once hailed "the most beautiful club ever seen"by a bevy of 1980s celebrities who attended the November 1987 opening of the Metro nightclub. The event was broadcast on Network Ten and hosted by Molly Meldrum. At the time Meldrum said the Metro was probably Australia's "most important"performance venue.

The venue's long-time entertainment booker, Jenny McEwan, said the theatre had made Melbourne one of the great cities of the world and "its loss will leave a void".
