The Great Consumer Trap. How language quietly shifts responsibility
We hear the word "consumer" every day. Consumer behaviour, consumer demand, consumer waste. But what if that word isn't as neutral as it seems?
In this TEDx-style talk, Kirsty Bishop-Fox explores how the language used in sustainability conversations quietly shapes where responsibility is placed. When people are framed as "consumers," they are positioned at the end of the system - and environmental harm is often attributed to individual buying choices. But many of those choices have already been shaped by design, production, pricing, and marketing decisions made long before a purchase ever occurs.
Drawing on experience across government, industry, and community, Kirsty connects how the everyday language used to describe shoppers can shift accountability away from manufacturers and systems and onto individuals.
Because when we change how we see ourselves, not just as consumers, but as participants with influence, we begin to see where real change is possible.
Bio: Kirsty Bishop-Fox is a sustainability educator and trainer at Sustainability Pathways, helping organisations and communities turn sustainability ideas into practical action. Her work focuses on helping people and organisations reduce their environmental impact by living today like tomorrow matters.
Kirsty reminds us that sustainability isn't just about policies, compliance, or waiting for someone else to act. We all have a role to play through everyday choices, community, and the courage to do things differently. She believes every small change matters, and that collective action can create meaningful change for people and the planet.
She is President and Co-Founder of Zero Waste Victoria, where she leads community engagement and advocacy initiatives across Victoria. Kirsty is also Program Manager for the Sustainable Living Festival and a member of the Maroondah Environment Advisory Committee. Her work is grounded in the belief that meaningful change happens when people feel connected, capable, and confident to take action.
