06 July 2003 - DEVELOPER Mirvac yesterday unveiled its grand vision for former football headquarters AFL Park, Waverley.

Home seekers had their first opportunity to buy at the site. The $1 billion development's first homes were pre-released to the public yesterday and 120 were sold for more than $60 million in five hours.

Mirvac has kept the style of housing a secret. But the Sunday Herald Sun has seen artist impressions of the houses and the remodelled ground.

There is a mix of contemporary and traditional housing styles.

Mirvac describes the development as "new generation"housing.

Part of the stadium - eight bays of the Sir Kenneth Luke stand - has been retained and will be refurbished.

The structure will be transformed into a blue-chip community facility for residents, with a cafeteria, convenience store, shops and a gymnasium.

Construction on the homes started two weeks ago. The first residents are due in January.

Mirvac Victoria's chief executive officer, Mick O'Brien, said yesterday's sales response was extraordinary.

"We have brought forward the next release and are now taking registrations,"he said.

Demand for the first release was so strong that Mirvac registered all expressions of interest and required a $2500 deposit.

Homes at Mirvac Waverley Park include three, four and five-bedroom styles and range from the low $400,000s to $600,000. The developer has applied to name the 80ha site Waverley Park.

It will house 4000 residents and be the state's biggest completely planned community.

Waverley Park's housing has been designed to maximise sunlight and privacy and to emphasise open-plan living.

About 20 per cent of the site is allocated to public open space - a park network, lake, wetlands, refurbished stadium and the oval - which will be Hawthorn's training ground.
