The Emerald Peacock

The Emerald Peacock

The Emerald Peacock boasts a restaurant, cocktail bar and a huge rooftop.

Two years after opening the much loved Red Hummingbird, Taj Hospitality Pty Ltd, found their next rooftop venue, which is on Lonsdale St just around the corner from the sister site The Red Hummingbird on Russell St. They were lucky to obtain the current heritage building which stood vacant for quite a few years after having served previously as a Buddhist training centre. Perhaps the good karma remains because the Emerald Peacock certainly has a good vibe.

The venue is divided into three distinct areas. The cocktail bar with its irregular wood panelling and vintage highlights is charming in its sophisticated glamour. The Peacock lounge returns to the old world luxe style with a mixture of elongated communal tables or decadent booths where you can enjoy some food with your drinks. Upstairs is the 'piece de resistance' or the rooftop bar. Giving a more relaxed vibe than downstairs, the rooftop is styled around recycled woods and natural tones, taking full advantage of its lantern lit space and boasting beautiful views of the city skyline. The overall effect is a mixture of retro and eclectic decadence that marries style with a fantastic ambience and vibe.

The Emerald Peacock can be relied upon for a true cocktail experience, with well loved classics and ingenious twists and creations. The elegant signature cocktail, 'The Emerald Peacock', sets the tone for the bar that is upheld well: a blend of Belvedere vodka, lime juice, elderflower, cucumber and fresh mint. The beer and wine lists are good but it is the cocktails people come here for. The Emerald Peacock also has a good menu on offer with tapas style sharing options and gourmet pizzas that are delicious and a great accompaniment to the drinks.

A clear night on the rooftop with an Emerald Peacock cocktail and a Hummingbird pizza is a good night indeed! On a weekend it is even possible to enjoy a unique girls' picnic at the Emerald Peacock - a booking is required but it is worth it to experience the delights of the bubbles, sweets and savouries found in the high tea with a twist.

In keeping with the careful designing and styling of the Emerald Peacock, the demographic is quite specific as the bar seeks to fill the needs of sophisticated, career oriented, well-travelled, socially and politically aware clients - those with a taste for variety and innovation. The crowd is savvy, loyal and friendly, generally having found the peacock through recommendation rather than walk-ins.

When asked about the bars in Melbourne, Managing Director Sharan Sagoo said, 'Melbourne is an exciting city that is full of little nooks and crannies. Melburnians are so spoilt when it comes to hidden finds as there are lots of treasures nestled in the laneways. Finding a rooftop is an absolute urban treasure'.
