Tien Tien Restaurant |
Let your hosts Tong and Jenny and their staff treat you to a fusion of Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian cuisines.
From the moment you walk through their Barkly premises, all Tien Tien staff are welcoming and extremely polite - exactly as it should be.
The decor is traditional, comfortable and adds to the warm ambience of the restaurant. Modern touches are exemplary in Tong and Jenny's choice of swirl-style dinnerware that creates a perfect balance between fusing modern with traditional.
As for the food, you will need several return visits to Tien Tien in order to sample so many of their delicious dishes. Here are my top choices:
- Grilled Oysters ($13.90)
This was one of the Chef's Specials. Freshly shucked oysters are properly set on sea salt and dressed with a mix of lime, tamarind and a secret ingredient that makes this oyster dish one of the best I have had to date.
Pad Thai Noodles ($12.90)
Rice stick noodles are delicately tossed with onion, bean sprouts, tofu and crushed peanuts and garnished with Tien Tien's 'special sauce' that will leave you licking your lips for more. Served with chicken or prawns or without for a vegetarian option.
Mekong River Beef Special ($15.80)
This authentic and traditional dish is prepared with the tender beef that is wok tossed with fresh chilli, lemongrass and curry leaves. Also available with chicken ($15.80), local calamari ($18.90), king prawns ($20.90) or Rockling fish ($18.90). For those who prefer a hint of chilli, ask for less chilli instead of huffing and puffing away.
Mango Prawns ($22.90 main; $11.90 entree)
Overall, this is a tasty dish of grilled king prawns wok tossed in a mild chilli, lemongrass and tamarind sauce, served on a bed of rocket and dressed with pickled mangoes. Advice for the chef: choice of king prawns is fantastic and juicy however, for $22.90, five prawns seems utterly stingy. And only two prawns for an entree is rather embarrassing. Fewer mangos would achieve a nice balance of sweetness and spice, instead of an influx of pickled flavours. Otherwise, a tasty dish with the right amount of tang.
Coconut Rice ($3.50)
Just like Patee Thai Restaurant, Tien Tien is another restaurant that served delicious coconut rice. It is a perfect accompaniment to any meat, seafood or vegetable dish and great to kill that chilli burn on your tongue. Tip: perhaps $3.50 is a little steep for a small bowl of this yummy side.
With the holiday season in full swing, Tien Tien is the place for a fusion of the best Asian cuisines, undivided attention, warm service and fantastic for large groups. There is a function room upstairs that comfortably seats 80 people and even more for cocktail parties. And a range of banquets are available for groups (minimum of four people).
