Verry Elleegant has won the race that stops a nation, claiming victory at the 2021 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse in thrilling fashion.

Verry Ellegant has become the first horse in the 161 runnings of the Melbourne Cup to win from barrier 18.

Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller won his first Melbourne Cup when reigning horse of the year, the top mare Verry Elleegant, stormed to victory to become the first of her sex to win the great race since Makybe Diva went back to back to back from 2003-05.

James McDonald produced a textbook ride on the now 10-time group 1 winner to cruise past the hot favourite Incentivise, who ran second, with European raider Spanish Mission third and Floating Artist the best of the Ciaron Maher-David Eustace quartet of entries in fourth place.
