Yarra Bend Park |
Yarra Bend Park is the largest park near Melbourne featuring river escarpments, open woodlands, playing fields and golf courses. Nestled in between Kew and Abbotsford is this fabulous bushland.
It has over 16 km of river frontage, and superb views of the city and the Dandenongs from the higher areas.
In 2021, Yarra Bend Park was heritage-listed as a place of cultural and archaeological significance. Heritage Council Victoria ruled that the 260ha park in Fairfield met the criteria for protection and conservation. Exemptions were granted for landscaping, playground equipment, roads and for maintenance of the Yarra Bend Golf Club. The Eastern Freeway, which bisects the site, was ruled to be exempt.
The parklands have archaeological importance because of sub-surface features from 19th century structures including the Merri Creek Protectorate Station, Merri Creek Aboriginal School, Native Police Corps Headquarters and the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum. The land was also the site of the Fairhaven Venereal Disease Clinic, which closed in 1951, and Fairlea Women's Prison from 1954 to 1996.

Some cars and motorcycles also use it as a racing track, but they are few and far between. Another habit is cyclist not using the 'marked' cycling lanes and paths preferring to play chicken with road traffic, but most get the message from car horns.
