3000 evacuated in Melbourne office fire |
Tuesday June 24 2003 - More than 3,000 people have been evacuated after fire broke out today in an office tower in Melbourne's city centre.
Ambulance spokesman James Howe said the fire began about 8.40am (AEST) and was believed to be centred on the building's 26th floor.
There have been no reports of injuries so far.
Police cars blocked off both ends of Bourke Street between King Street and William Street in the city's busy financial and legal district.
Fire engines ringed the entrance to the building as workers who arrived early for work were sent back onto the street
